  Wittenham Clumps Wildlife Appeal
February 2008

WITTENHAM CLUMPS WILDLIFE APPEAL

The Wittenham Clumps is one the most loved landscapes in south Oxfordshire and is owned and managed by the Northmoor Trust.   The Trust has a unique opportunity to further enhance the  beauty and wildlife of the Clumps by restoring and recreating 37 hectares of wildlife-rich lowland meadow.

This project will enhance the site to become even more attractive to both wildlife and people. Work will  take place to increase grazing with more native hardy breeds of cattle and sheep and  also introduce traditional hay-cutting regimes. Wildflower seeding, plug planting and green hay spreading techniques will also be introduced which will lead to a more attractive landscape, both for visitors and wildlife.

Throughout the UK over 97% of grassland has been lost in just 60 years and one in five of our plants face extinction. Lowland Meadow is particularly under threat in Oxfordshire and the project will extend the valuable grassland habitat of the Clumps into the surrounding farmland. Habitats will be restored for nationally threatened species including the skylark, pippestrelle bat and hornet robberfly and others, such as the barn owl, yellowhammer and damselfly, will also benefit.

The Trust has been approaching a number of landfill operators, companies and Trusts, and so far we have had pledges of support that cover the majority of the project costs.

However, we urgently need your help to raise the remaining £15,000 for this important work to take place. Each and every donation can make a real difference!  For example £10 can pay for two metres of stock fencing and £25 can help purchase a bag of wildflower seed.

You can also help by distributing appeal leaflets and telling friends, families and work colleagues about what we are trying to do.

For updates on the appeal and details of how you can get involved or donate, please  visit www.northmoortrust.co.uk or contact the Northmoor Trust on 01865 409423.

Please give what you can as every donation counts. Thank you.
