Bring or take or swap - all for free. Items that you are welcome to bring along are: books, CDs, children’s toys and baby items, garden tools or equipment, household goods, kitchen ware, pots pans and small items of furniture. Bring a photo and details of larger pieces to put on the swap board. At just three swap shops, held in January, over 1000 people were involved and goods weighing in the region of two and a half tons were taken away – items that might otherwise have ended up in landfill. What can we achieve between 1st and 8th March with so many swap shops taking place? Following the success of the county-wide swap shops in the last two years, groups of local people are coordinating their events to raise awareness about reducing waste through reuse. Having swap shops all on one day will give a greater impact to encourage people to reduce, reuse and recycle. Because they are free and local, swap shops benefit the whole community from people on low incomes and those wanting a bargain, to those who want to help reduce waste by giving away their unused household items for re-use. You don’t have to bring anything to take something home for free, and you don’t have to take to bring. You can even just come along to browse! For new comers to an area this is an ideal way to set up a home. The Swap Shops are being run by the volunteer led Community Action Groups (CAGs) that work within Oxfordshire communities to save resources and reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill sites. Oxfordshire is among the best in the country at recycling with a current rate of more than 40 per cent, but we could do better and a longer-term target of 55 per cent has been set. Avoiding waste is the best answer of all. The CAGs were the first of their kind in the country and were set up by Resource Futures in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council. The model is now being copied in other parts of Britain. Look out for posters giving exact locations, visit the CAG website for a list of locations at: www.cagoxfordshire.org.uk or phone Frances 07903037290 for more information about swap shops. We have a “how to” fact sheet for those wanting to hold one for the first time. If you would like to know more about the CAG project or are interested in setting up a group in your area, please contact the CAG project officers on 01865 815871 or check out our web-site at: www.cagoxfordshire.org.uk
