Following a successful career in the law, PR and media, Ed Vaizey was elected
MP for Wantage and Didcot in 2005.
Since then he’s been a visible presence in his constituency and has been
involved in many local issues, including pushing for better rail services, the
campaign to save Wantage Arts Centre and visits to the victims of July’s floods.
I was keen to find out more about the man behind the politician, so I asked Ed
to tell me a bit more about a day in his life.
Where do you live?
I live in Sparsholt with my wife Alex and our
one year old son Joseph. We’re also expecting our second child - it’s due next
year, on Leap Day!
What was your first job and how has your career progressed?
My
first ever job was working for an art dealer when I left school. After
University, I worked for the Tory party. Then I trained and practised as a
barrister, before becoming the director of a PR company and then an MP.
How/why did you become an MP?
For me, this is always the most
difficult question to answer. Being an MP is a vocation, and I think I became
interested because my dad was very involved in politics.
What are your plans for the future, either politically or personally?
I don't really have any! To be a good dad and a good MP is the limit of my
ambition.
Who or what inspires you in your work?
Making a difference to
people's lives. Being able to help someone who has come up against a brick wall
is the most satisfying part of the job.
Aside from politics what other interests do you have?
My family! I
also like watching football and horse riding
What’s your favourite local shop?
I like Milletts and other local
farm shops and farmers markets, and I spend a lot of time in the village shop at
Childrey.
And your favourite local pub or restaurant?
The Eyston Arms in East
Hendred.
What are you currently reading?
I have just finished Douglas
Hurd's life of Robert Peel, and now I am reading a Sam Bourne thriller.
Desert island choices – one book, one song, one luxury:
Robert
Caro's Life of Lyndon Johnson; London Calling by The Clash; my son Joseph.
What’s your philosophy for life?
Follow your heart and be
passionate about what you do.
